The Prisoners
My latest theory is that Number One is the Rover, who is the deux ex machina of the story, as a convenient way to be sure that escape is impossible. Whenever we see Rover emerging, it is under the sea, and he seems to break away from more of the gooey substance beneath the surface of the ocean. This leads me to believe that Rover lives underneath the island, as the Village's guardian. I've noticed that every home has a lava lamp sitting somewhere conspicuous, which if connected to Rover would be an ideal way for him to observe all the goings on of the characters. Instead of using stealth and hidden cameras and surveillance, Rover is able to watch the daily lives of everyone without question. Whether this is because no one knows the nature of their funkadelic lamps, or because as Number One no one will question his authority, Rover still has the upper hand in everything. He is undefeatable; he can be shot, he can travel over water, he can kill in public without any questioning from anyone. Although at first it seems as though Rover is a tool used by the Number Two's as they continually call for it to bring back escaping prisoners, they do not keep Rover in a designated place, which leads me to believe he was there before them, and was stumbled upon by accident, and now utilized by the Village while, in ways unbeknownst to anyone, he utilizes the Village back.

Follow up thought: Rover isn't Number One; there are no odd numbers. That's why Number Two didn't answer the question Number 6 asked: "Who is Number One?" because there isn't one. Rover is Number Zero, or '0'. It plays into the circular theme, but it's also showing that Rover is the leader of the island. It prevents everyone from leaving, which is why even the Number Twos vary in personalities: None of them really want to be there, every inhabitant is a prisoner in that there's no escaping the island, but no one is truly in charge, it's fair game for anyone to become leader.
ReplyDeleteThis is extremely like Lord of the Flies, the monster is them. They truly govern themselves, in a way.
