Field trip

This field trip was oodles of fun, not to mention an interesting learning experience. It was the first time I've ever gone somewhere and tried to document it with photography. I loved shooting pictures like mad; I felt as though I was preserving the fun moments, as well as showing exactly what I love seeing.

Pioneering through the city with a group of teenagers was fantastic and empowering. Even though we got lost for a little while, knowing that we were able to go into a city and find our way around made me feel like we were awesome Vikings on an adventure.

Swan Lake was incredible. Act One I was, as Luke predicted, incredibly sleepy, but I kept my glossy eyes glued to the stage nonetheless. By Act Two I was incredibly engaged, and woke myself up for the rest with a series of harsh pinches. The absolute best part of the show for me was the character relationships, specifically between the Queen and Prince, and the Prince and the Swan. Whenever the Queen held out her hand behind her, gesturing for him to take it, I felt pangs through my whole body. At the end when the Prince is dead and the Queen finds him, I started crying. She holds him screaming, but it's too late to show affection, he's gone. Above them the Prince is in the Swan's arms, and the whole thing was so touching and beautiful. I thought it was a wonderful remake of a very classic (credits to Katzy for the word!) with a subtle difference that changed everything. By making the swans male, it became even more about loving who you aren't allowed to love, and doing what you must to be happy even if it's deemed wrong by others. The asylum scene was interesting, I loved the way the shadows played on the background while the characters were downstage interacting, none of them speaking to the Prince.

I wound up taking over 500 photographs in the city, and I'm excited to upload them once we get our assignment. I'd like to work at photography, it's always been a hobby of mine but I don't think I ever took it seriously enough. Perhaps there will be more of it for me along the road.

And now, good night and good luck.
